Montgomery County is an established leader in trail development in Pennsylvania and the country, aggressively developing trails for recreation and transportation throughout the county. Our regional trails link our county parks and historical sites, as well as greenways, waterways, heritage corridors, and of course many villages and towns throughout Montgomery County. Our trail corridors extend and connect local path systems, bring regional events and resources within reach of all residents, and provide the opportunity for enjoyment of diverse landscapes, natural features, and scenic vistas.
Montgomery County’s long-standing history of trail development began in the late 1970s with the construction of the first phase of the Schuylkill River Trail, a designated National Recreation Trail. In 1996, the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners adopted an open space plan, Creating an Open Space Legacy. The plan includes a separate trail chapter that sets policies for regional trail development and proposes a network of regionally important trails totaling approximately 160 miles.
